Infosys has laid off 240 of its trainees, claiming their failure to clear the company’s internal assessments as the reason behind the firings. This comes after Infosys had announced on April 17, 2025 that it plans on hiring 20,000 for the fiscal year 2026.

The 240 trainees were hired in October 2024 under the designations of System Engineers and Digital Specialist Engineers and were a part of the Generic foundation training program. As per Infosys, the trainees were unable to meet the qualifications despite being given additional preparation time, mock assessments, doubt-clearing sessions, and three separate testing attempts.

As per reports by Moneycontrol, 730 Infosys trainees sat down for their third attempt at the qualifying exam on April 17, 2025. Following this, reports suggest that an internal email was sent out to the fired trainees on April 18, 2025, announcing the layoffs. As per Moneycontrol, the email sent to the trainees read as follows:

“Further to the announcement of the results of your final assessment attempt, please be informed that you have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program. While this may be a disappointing outcome, we are here to further support you in your learning journey.

As you explore opportunities outside of Infosys, we have planned professional outplacement services to help you on that journey. We also wish to offer you another career pathway, by taking an Infosys sponsored external training to prepare for potential roles in the BPM industry. On successful completion of the training, you may also apply to available opportunities in Infosys BPM Limited. However, if you wish to continue honing your IT skills, you also have an option to choose an Infosys sponsored external training program on Information Technology fundamentals to further support your IT career journey.”

The fired trainees were also offered resources to support their exit from the company.

The new batch of trainee layoffs for Infosys comes after it had fired 30-45 trainees in March 2025. In February 2025, Infosys also fired over 300 of its trainees from the Mysuru campus. The IT giant cited failure to clear internal assessments as the reason for both these situations as well.
